Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2026 Recap: Two Routes, Great Rides and Hundreds of Photos
The 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was one for the books! We had an incredible time photographing riders, exploring the Black Hills and reconnecting with the motorcycle community that makes Sturgis such a special experience every year.
This was also a big year for BayMotoPhoto. We photographed Needles Highway last year, but 2026 was the first time our team covered both Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road at the same time. Between the unforgettable scenery, steady flow of motorcycles and riders arriving from around the world, we couldn’t have asked for a better week.
Photographing Two Routes at the Same Time
Needles Highway was already a familiar route for us after photographing there last year. Famous for its towering granite formations, narrow tunnels and winding pavement, it remains a spectacular setting for Sturgis motorcycle photography.
What made 2026 different was adding simultaneous coverage on Iron Mountain Road. With its sweeping curves, dramatic scenery and seemingly endless variety of motorcycles, Iron Mountain Road has everything a rally photographer could want.
Covering both routes at the same time allowed us to photograph more riders as they explored the Black Hills. Whether you cruised past us on Iron Mountain Road or leaned through the curves of Needles Highway, we hope we captured a moment that takes you right back to the ride.
Finding a New Photo Location Near Hill City
One of the highlights of Sturgis 2026 was discovering a new photography location in Johnson Valley, just outside Hill City. The spot offered a beautiful mountain view and a fresh perspective on riders traveling through the area.
We’re always looking for locations that showcase both the rider and the incredible Black Hills landscape. This new spot gave us exactly that: motorcycles in motion with a gorgeous mountain backdrop that made the finished photographs truly stand out.
The Rain Mostly Stayed Away
The weather forecast made some people nervous leading into the rally. Rain appeared to be a real possibility throughout the week, but fortunately, it held off until Saturday.
Despite the changing forecast, we saw tons of riders enjoying the Black Hills. Motorcycles continued rolling along Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway and the roads surrounding Hill City. A few clouds certainly weren’t enough to keep the Sturgis crowd from getting out and making the most of these legendary rides.
That’s one of the things we love about photographing the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally: riders show up ready for an adventure, regardless of what the weather app says.
A Night in Sturgis—and a Tempting Stop at Black Hills Harley-Davidson
Of course, no Sturgis trip would be complete without spending a little time in Sturgis proper. We made our way into town one evening and enjoyed a few well-earned beers at One-Eyed Jack’s.
We also visited Black Hills Harley-Davidson, where we had to exercise some serious restraint. There may have been a used Harley that looked awfully tempting, but somehow we managed to leave without buying another motorcycle to ride home—this time!
Moments like these are part of what makes rally week so much fun. The photography keeps us busy, but we always try to experience some of the atmosphere, local businesses and motorcycle culture that bring people back to Sturgis year after year.
Hundreds of Sturgis Motorcycle Photos Sold
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who purchased a BayMotoPhoto image following the 2026 rally. We sold hundreds of motorcycle photos, including many beautiful prints that were shipped to riders throughout the United States.
Our photos also reached riders well beyond the country. International visitors purchased images from us this year, including customers from as far away as South Africa!
It’s pretty amazing to think that photographs captured on Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway are now hanging in homes around the country—and around the world. Each order means a great deal to us. We know these images represent more than a motorcycle passing a camera; they preserve a special moment from an unforgettable trip.
Thank you to every rider who stopped to look, purchased a digital image, ordered a print or shared our photography with friends and family. Your support allows us to keep doing what we love.
Why Sturgis and the Black Hills Are So Special
There is simply nowhere else quite like Sturgis during rally week. The motorcycles are incredible, but the experience is about much more than the bikes. It’s the people you meet, the places you explore and the feeling of riding through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.
Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway, Hill City and the surrounding Black Hills each offer something unique. We feel fortunate to spend time there every year and even more fortunate that our work allows us to preserve these experiences for other riders.
Being a Sturgis motorcycle rally photographer gives us a front-row seat to thousands of individual adventures. Every motorcycle, rider and group has a story, and we love capturing a small part of it.
BayMotoPhoto Will Be Back for Sturgis 2027
After such a fantastic 2026 rally, we’re already looking forward to returning for Sturgis 2027!
Next time, we plan to get an early start and begin photographing riders around August 4. We’ll share more details about our routes and photography locations as the rally gets closer, so keep an eye on BayMotoPhoto for updates.
Until then, thank you for making Sturgis 2026 such a memorable experience. We loved seeing all of you riding through the Black Hills, and we can’t wait to do it again.
We’ll see you on the road in 2027!
